Letter from the Assistant Director

We hope that our Montessori families have enjoyed building memories this summer, and we are so looking forward to being back together soon!

While you’ve been away, Love of Learning has been working on exciting changes and transitions. Changes here are always made in the interests of facilitating the instruction and loving guidance provided by our professional and caring staff. Moreover, it is always a priority that the Love of Learning community safely enjoy the beauty of our natural setting while nurturing joyful curiosity and kindness in our students. The coming year will be an exciting one, a foundational year for continued growth.

The most visible changes you’ll see involve staffing. Many of you already know that Denise Brazeau will not be returning in the fall. She informed us last spring that she was going to stop teaching in 2018/19; this presented an opportunity to discuss alternative roles for her in the school. While that alternative role has not yet come to fruition, we hope to be able to work with Denise in the future, with the wealth of the experience and wisdom she brings to the table.

You will also notice that Carolyn Barnard is no longer with Love of Learning. Ms. Barnard was with us from the beginning, and the school was touched in many ways by her knowledge and by the warmth she brought to the Love of Learning community. Her departure will be certainly be felt, and it comes with the challenge and opportunity to reinvent many office procedures. Mr. Tim Barnard will also be moving on, with our gratitude for his service. We will be taking this opportunity to revamp how we have done physical education; you’ll be learning more in the coming months.

So, changes are afoot, and with changes come opportunities. Recent changes at Love of Learning have not detracted from our school’s commitment to providing a quality Montessori education for our students. In fact, in important ways, the changes have catalyzed improvements. We’ve hired a bookkeeper, Jen Vomvas, who brings a wealth of experience working with non-profit financials. We have also hired a familiar face to many of you: Keri Puglisi, long-time parent and PTA president at Love of Learning, has been hired as Office Manager. Along with a deep love for our school, Keri is incredibly qualified to help bring greater organization to our support structures and, among other things, increase social media outreach with the goal of fostering stronger community. Courtney Thaler and Julie Anne Meixsell will continue to round out our office staff as they did so superbly last year: these are highly experienced, capable and caring people who are strengthening our school in important ways, and I am so excited to be working with them.

Lastly, while Mr. Thompson remains the Director of Love of Learning, the community can expect to see less of him this year. He has poured himself into this school over the years, and the school has developed its character under his direction, a kind and safe community fit for our children to learn and find themselves and their places in our world. He will remain the executive of the school, while transitioning much of the day-to-day direction to me in my new role as Assistant Director – a responsibility I am honored to have. In addition to the time I have spent getting to know Love of Learning from the ground up, I come to this position with an AMI Elementary teaching certification from WMI, a Masters degrees in History from the University of St Andrews and one in Education from Loyola, educational administration experience from Simmons College and non-profit management experience from Crystal Lake Camps, and years of working with young people at both summer camps and in wilderness therapy.

Love of Learning is a truly special place!  We have a strong and loving community of staff, parents and children, and I could not be more excited to journey forward together in the years ahead.
