Friday - Chess with Mr. Stenzel

Recent studies confirm what most well-informed teachers already know - Chess is a superior educational tool that develops important mental disciplines. Concentration, logical reasoning, goal-setting and rational planning are all integrated and required during each game of chess. And, best of all, these intellectual benefits develop from an enjoyable and exciting source - Chess is fun to play!

Harold Stenzel, our chess instructor is a National Tournament Director. He has successfully taught Love of Learning students for the past several years. His is approach to teaching chess has been as successful as it is simple; make learning an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Although winning is the ultimate goal of a chess game, the personal competitive aspect is de-emphasized in favor of encouraging the creative development of the student. Each step to improvement is presented in a clear and comprehensive manner; basic strategy, tactics, planning, and chess notation are all covered in order to learn and play better chess. The result is a pleasurable journey that points the way towards a firmer grasp of winning patterns and techniques, in addition to progressive intellectual and academic improvement. We are proud to offer your child the best!

  • Grades: 1-6

  • Time: Lessons are held during the afternoon and students will be finished before 3:00pm dismissal

  • Dates: Fridays, March 8 - May 17

  • 9 sessions

  • Tuition: $144, chess sets and boards will be provided

A variety of after-school enrichment classes are offered throughout the year for all ages at both campuses. These classes demand a high level of interest and concentration from the students. This kind of specialized instruction is not appropriate for everyone and is, therefore, optional. These activities are geared more for children four years old and up. For most three year olds, it's recommended to wait until your child is acclimated to school before enrolling in ancillaries. Class sizes are limited. Enrollment is first come, first serve.

Preschool Ancillaries-Spring 2019

These ancillary classes are open to all preschoolers at either campus; not all classes are offered at both locations. Top of the Hill preschoolers are welcome to enroll in Harborside classes, provided parents provide transportation.

Classes for preschoolers run for forty-five minutes at the times stated below, with the exception of Spanish, which will be half an hour. There is no separate fee for the class; it is covered in the Extended Hour cost of $12/an hour. If you anticipate your child attending on a regular basis, we would appreciate if you would register in advance as it’s helpful for teachers to know numbers. Drop-ins are welcomed and encouraged.
